Att fira nyårsafton i Tokyo var verkligen hur kul som helst. Vi hittade en mysig restaurang och avnjöt ännu en smaskig måltid med izakaya som skulle kunna kallas för japansk tapas – många olika mindre rätter med allt från grillspett, nudlar och krabba till sushi och sashimi med klassisk tonfisk och lax men också med vad vi tror kan ha varit hästkött…
Efter att vi ätit oss ordentligt mätta var det dags för den avslutande höjdpunkten på året: karaoke i ett disko-upplyst privat rum i kombination med ett obegränsat antal drinkar, som personalen i receptionen uttryckte det med ett finurligt leende på läpparna: ”all free drinks – many many ok!!”.
Upplagt för succé med andra ord och oj va kul vi hade! I två och en halv timme sjöng och dansade vi till låtar med Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears, One Direction (the story of my laaaaajf!!), Taylor Swift och alla möjliga andra artister. Som avslutning och big finale en halvtimme innan midnatt tog vi alla sju plats framför de två mikrofonerna och tog i för kung och fosterland till The Final Countdown!!
Vi gav oss sedan ut på gatorna i Shibuya och styrde stegen mot det stora kända övergångsstället där vi fått höra att många samlas för att fira ankomsten av det nya året. När vi närmade oss märkte vi däremot att Tokyos polisstyrka på ett väldigt organiserat vis lyckats stänga av torget helt och hållet för gångtrafikanter. Istället följde vi strömmen av förvirrade nyårsfirare och hade flyt nog att hamna precis i mitten av folkmassan på ett annat torg i närheten som tydligen fått agera substitut för Shibuya Crossing. Besvikna till en början eftersom vi sett fram emot att fira på gatan men eftersom detta nya ställe var helt överflödat av festglada och firande människor så var stämningen på topp ändå! Folk klättrade på skyltar och väggar, Jenny satt på Randys axlar och allt dokumenterades med GoPros på selfiepinnar!
Det nya året firades sedan vidare på en japansk nattklubb med typ åtta våningar. Trots det lyckades vi på något magiskt sätt hålla ihop hela natten och tillslut hitta hem igen genom det omfattande och förvirrande tunnelbanesystemet!
Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Tokyo was so much fun. We found a nice restaurant and enjoyed another delicious meal with what we could call Japanese tapas – lots of different smaller dishes with everything from skewers, noodles and king crab to sushi and sashimi with the classics tuna and salmon but also something we thing might have been horse meat…
After eating more than enough it was time for the final highlight of the year: karaoke in a private room lit up like a disco in combination with an unlimited amount of drinks, like the staff at the front desk said with a mischievous smile on his face: ”all free drinks – many many ok!!”. Set up for success in other words and we indeed had so much fun! For two and a half hours we sang and danced to songs with Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears, One Direction (the story of my laaaaajf!!”, Taylor Swift and all kinds of different artists. As a closure and big finale half an hour prior to midnight all seven of us took place in front of our two microphones and went all in singing The Final Countdown!!
After that epic ending of our first karaoke experience we headed out to the streets of Shibuya and started walking towards the big and famous crosswalk where we had heard that a lot of people would gather to celebrate the arrival of the new year. When getting closer though we noticed that the police force of Tokyo had managed to, in a very organized way, close the square completely to pedestrians. Instead we followed the stream of confused New Year celebrators and happened to end up in the middle of the crowd on another nearby plaza that apparently served as the substitute for Shibuya Crossing. We felt a little bit disappointed to start with since we had looked forward to celebrating on the street but the atmosphere and amount of party-excited people changed that immediately! Guys were climbing the walls and signs on the streets, Jenny sat on Randy’s shoulders and all of it was documented with gopros on selfiesticks!
We then continued to celebrate the new year at a Japanese nightclub with something like eight stories. However we somehow managed to stick together the whole night and eventually find our way back home again through the extensive and confusing subway system!
Taking a nap on the subway was a very common sight in Tokyo and we of course followed the tradition on our way home after the New Year’s celebration…
